E-Scooter Collisions
There has been an increase in the number of e-scooter users on the road within recent years. E-scooter users are vulnerable on the road as they are not protected by a vehicle body in the same way as a car, making them much less visible.
In 2021, there were 1,280 collisions involving e-scooters, compared to 460 in 2020. Over 120 of the casualties which were reported in 2021 sustained serious injuries.
What does the UK law say on E-scooters?
The rules regarding e-scooters are fast moving and evolving. E-scooters are currently recognised as ‘powered transporters’ and so there are no specific laws for them as they fall under the category as motorbikes. The only e-scooters that can be used legally on public roads are those which are rented as part of government-backed trials.
Private e-scooters can be used on private land however, they cannot be used on public roads, cycle lanes or pavements. This is because e-scooters do not have visible red lights, number plates or signalling ability. Our expert lawyers can advise you if you are unsure whether you can make a claim.
